Submission Guidelines
Cadenza: noun - an outstanding virtuoso passage or flourish, sometimes improvised, given by a solo instrument or voice towards the end, or at some important stage of a movement, concerto, or aria...
Cadenza is a twice yearly magazine, publishing vibrant, modern short stories, articles, poetry, interviews and markets of interest to fiction writers. It is A5 format, perfect bound with a glossy cover, and there are approx 80-90 pages of content.
Editor Zoë King is looking for:
* Short stories of up to 3,000 words submitted via our twice-yearly competitions.
Please Note: Because we have a backog of work awaiting publication and consideration, we are currently closed to open submissions.
* Poetry of up to 40 lines
* Interviews with published novelists and short story writers
* Intelligent, well written articles that appeal to fiction writers
With regard to both short stories, and poetry, we continue to look for unique 'voices': writers who can produce crackling, vibrant work and who aren't afraid to take risks. Inventive use of language is important, as are original, arresting characters.
PLEASE - help us to help you!
Stories should be no longer than 3,000 words and should not have been previously published in the UK, or be entered for current writing competitions. Please use a clear readable font, such as Times New Roman 12 point. Use double 'smartquotes' for speech, single for other quotations. Indent the first line of a new paragraph by approx 2.5mm, and DO NOT leave white space between paragraphs other than to indicate a time/situation break.
Poetry
We're delighted to have secured the services of William Conelly as our Poetry editor. Your poetry should be sent to him via email, ONLY. We no longer accept snailmail poetry submissions.
NEW! From 01.02.2007, we are changing to twice a year reading periods for poetry, April/May, and October/November. If you send work outside those times, please be aware that it will not be read or responded to until the reading period. Also, because of repeated problems, we no longer accept simultaneous submissions.
Poetry guidelines
Please include a note detailing your previous publishing history (if any) and a little about you. It shows you have given some thought to the presentation of your work AND the magazine you're submitting it to.
We have a certain house style for our poetry section. Mainly, this means - in common with general contemporary practice - we do not capitalise the first letter of each line unless it is the start of a new sentence and we put poem titles in capitals. In future, we will not adopt the practice of changing American spelling to standard UK English spelling.
We will never (intentionally!) change a poet's words or punctuation unless it is a glaring misspelling or grammatical lapse - for example if greengrocer's apostrophe syndrome has crept in.
We don't have an absolute ban on poems over 40 lines, but be aware a poem under that length is more likely to find room in the magazine.
We are happy to look at work that has been published before, but always let us know when that is the case so that we can credit the other publication if appropriate. We have never agreed with the 'one shot and it's dead' approach to publishing poetry.
This one should be obvious but clearly it's not. SAMPLE AT LEAST ONE COPY OF THE MAGAZINE BEFORE YOU SUBMIT. Think about it: If everyone who writes poetry in this country subscribed to just one literary magazine a year, the small press would be in a far healthier state and that's got to be good news for readers and writers. And reading a sample copy will help you get an idea of the sort of poetry we usually choose to publish.
***
Cadenza welcomes strong, innovative articles on all aspects of fiction writing, but we don't want to see clichéd pieces about rejections, presentation and writer's block!
Articles can be up to 2000 words in length, but should be written in a succinct, economical style. The usual rules of manuscript layout apply. Only well presented typed/word processed work will be considered.
Submissions for all sections of the magazine should be sent via email, although competition entries may still be sent by snailmail to the Cadenza address. We also welcome letters from readers and contributors on any aspect of the magazine, or writing in general.
Please send as a Word attachment - and include a brief bio, with details of your writing credits (if any) to date.
Any work sent by snail-mail must be accompanied by a suitably sized and appropriately stamped addressed envelope for reply. Overseas readers should include two IRCs.
Fiction and features should be typed on white A4 paper, double spaced with wide margins, though poetry can be presented as intended to appear on the printed page. The author's name and the title of the work should appear as a header on each page, and all pages should be stapled together. A clear, easy to read typeface should be used (Arial or Times New Roman, Pt 12) and work should be available either via download, or on CD rom.
We are currently looking at the possibility of paying our writers, but have yet to finalise details. Watch this space.
Finally, we would reiterate that before submitting, you should see a copy of the magazine, and if you like what you see, please support us by taking out a subscription. Small press magazines CANNOT SURVIVE without subscribers.
Please make cheques payable to: 'Cadenza', and send to Cadenza Subscriptions at the Cadenza address.
